As with other chronic diseases, good health outcomes in asthma depend on adherence to evidence-based management guidelines. Knowledge translation of these guidelines is a critical component to the implementation of the guidelines by health care providers. RESPTREC® is recognized as a valuable knowledge translation resource of respiratory guidelines for health care professionals working in the area of asthma.

An accurate disease diagnosis, optimal medical management, engaging individuals and their families in self-management skills and regular medical follow-up are all critical components to relieving the effects and the burden of this chronic disease. The RESPTREC® Asthma Course curriculum includes a comprehensive review of all areas of asthma care.

Note: Participants are required to complete the Education, Asthma and COPD courses in order to be eligible to write the Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE) examination.

CHAPTER: Pathophysiology, Signs and Symptoms, and Epidemiology

  1. Define asthma
  2. Define work-related asthma
  3. Explain the epidemiology of asthma in terms of:
    1. Prevalence
    2. Morbidity
    3. Mortality
    4. Economic costs
    5. Impact on quality of life

CHAPTER: Risk Factors and Triggers

  1. Explain the risk factors for the development of asthma in each of the following periods:
    1. Prenatal
    2. Infancy
    3. Preschool
    4. School age
    5. Adulthood
  2. Explain the pathophysiology of asthma
  3. Explain the relevance of asthma triggers
    1. Differentiate between inflammatory and non-inflammatory triggers, and give examples
    2. Give examples of work-related triggers
  4. Describe the relationship of asthma to: rhinitis; sinusitis; gastroesophageal reflux disorder; and obesity
  5. Identify the common signs and symptoms of asthma
  6. Discuss the effect of the menstrual cycle on asthma

CHAPTER: Asthma Diagnosis

  1. Demonstrate how to take an accurate and effective patient history
  2. Describe the importance of the physical findings (from a physical examination) for a person with asthma
  3. Explain the criteria used for diagnosing asthma in pre-school children
  4. Explain lung function tests that may be used to confirm a diagnosis of asthma in children 6 years of age and over and in adults
  5. Define spirometry
  6. Describe spirometry in terms of role of spirometric assessment including:

CHAPTER: Asthma Control

  3. Provide instructions on using a peak flow meter properly
  4. Correctly interpret peak flow measurements in relation to control of asthma
  5. Explain loss of control of asthma

      6. Oral glucocorticosteroids
      7. Oral methylxanthines
  6. Explain asthma management in terms of preschool children
  7. Explain the asthma management continuum in relation to children 6 years of age & older & adults
  8. Explain the management of difficult-to-treat or severe asthma
  9. Explain the effect of:
    1. Pregnancy on asthma
    2. Asthma on pregnancy
  10. Define exercise-induced bronchospasm
  11. Explain how exercise-induced bronchospasm is managed
  12. Describe management of work-related asthma
  13. Explain the indications for use of epinephrine in the treatment of asthma
  14. Explain which delivery devices are better suited to patients of different ages and varying needs
  15. Demonstrate for each of the following devices:
    1. Proper technique for; and
    2. Proper maintenance of:
      1. Metered-dose inhaler
      2. Metered-dose inhaler with spacer (mouthpiece and mask)
      3. Turbuhaler®

  16. Explain immunotherapy in relation to:
    1. Its definition
    2. Its role in asthma control

CHAPTER: Asthma Exacerbations

  1. Define:
    1. Asthma worsenings
    2. Acute exacerbation of asthma
  2. Explain how to treat acute asthma in emergency care
  3. Explain the components of a discharge plan following hospitalization due to an asthma exacerbation
  4. Explain the action plan in terms of asthma control
  5. Explain the action plan in terms of:
    1. Its components
    2. How to adjust medications when asthma is uncontrolled

CHAPTER: Follow-up Management

  1. Explain:
    1. What is meant by follow-up
    2. The goal of follow-up
  2. Describe the areas to assess during a follow-up visit
  3. Demonstrate how to conduct an effective follow-up visit.
  4. Identify the circumstances that warrant a referral to:
    1. A pediatric asthma specialist
    2. An asthma specialist (adult)
    3. A certified asthma educator
    4. An appropriate health care professional

Registrants must meet the following entrance criteria:

  • hold a degree/diploma in a recognized health care profession
  • scope of practice to include counselling clients
  • must verify current license to practice (and registration number, if applicable)
  • indicate your expectations of the course and how you anticipate using the new skills and knowledge

If there is a question regarding met criteria, acceptance to the program will be made on an individual basis and at the discretion of the RESPTREC® Management committee.

The original content for the RESPTREC® Asthma Course was developed in 1999 and has been continually updated to reflect the most recent evidence for optimal asthma care.

A wide range of representatives from health disciplines and endorsing agencies were involved in curriculum development including: the Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS - COPD Clinical Assembly and authors of guidelines and publications), Canadian Respiratory Health Professionals (CRHP), Family Physician's Airways Group of Canada (FPAGC), The Lung Association, clinicians, researchers, certified respiratory educators, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, nursing and physical therapy.
